Vienna by Night – the Elysian Singers

Come and hear the Elysian Singers in "Vienna by Night", a feast of music from and inspired by one of Europe's culturally pivotal cities. The concert, at St Paul's Covent Garden on Wednesday 19th October, features pieces from Monteverdi's 8th Book of Madrigals, which he dedicated to Archduke Ferdinand III. From the 18th century there is Caldara's extraordinary 16-part 'Crucifixus.' But the meat of the programme consists of Romantic works from the 19th and early 20th centuries: Franz Schubert's "Gesang der Geister" is one of the masterpieces of the male choir repertoire; Brahms is represented by his superb 'Warum ist das Licht Gegeben'. From the early 20th century come highly Romantic works by Mahler, Berg and Webern, recently arranged for multipart choir by Clytus Gottwald. Finally Schoenberg's astonishing 'Friede auf Erde' hovers on the cusp of the modern era.
