This
talk will discuss the work of photographer Gerti Deutsch, from her
Viennese portraits and street scenes in the 1930s through her
photojournalism, starting with the legendary Picture Post weekly, from 1938 to 1954. The focus will be on four wartime stories for the Post: Their First Day in England [the arrival of the first Kindertransport]; The Good Soldier Schweik [Die Laterne Theatre Production]; A Child's View of the War [East End children, bombed out, painting at the Goldfinger house in Hampstead] and The First Coloured Girls get down to Work.
The
talk will be given by Amanda Hopkinson, author of books on photography
and photographers, literary translator and professor of literary
translation at City, University of London. She is also Gerti Deutsch's
daughter.
