Marietta Bearman, Charmian Brinson, Richard Dove, Anthony Grenville, Marian Malet and Jennifer Taylor, all members of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London, will be speaking on the subject of the Austrian Centre, a wartime organisation run by and for Austrian refugees from Hitler. Basing the evening on and around their joint book, Out of Austria (London, 2008), they will talk about exile from Austria between 1938 and 1945, chart the rise and fall of the Austrian Centre and focus in particular on some of its best known activities: its newspaper Zeitspiegel, its art and its theatre (Laterndl).
This talk accompanies the exhibition Traces, a project curator Julia Winkler began as a means of preventing the memory of the Hecker family, who perished in the Shoah, becoming erased from history. The exhibition is on view at the ACF London until Friday 8 June 2012.
