Total Refusal at Flatpack Festival 2024

  • Tue 14 May 2024

Flatpack is a mobile arts organisation which exists to show amazing work, bring people together and develop new ideas. Since 2006 the festival has gone from strength to strength, established as a vital fixture in Birmingham's cultural calendar. Stirring together a colourful stew of screenings and performances, walks and installations, the programme boasts a mind-boggling range of international talent with an emphasis on the playful, the surprising and the indefinable.

Exploring the relationship between art, meaning-making and space-making, the Short Film programme sees a censorship board struggling to agree on what makes a film appropriate (Titanic: Suitable Version for Iranian Families), a videogame character searching for something missing (Kinderfilm) and an uncomfortable realisation during a promotional video project (This Film Might be White).

You’ll leave the cinema with plenty to think about.

Austrian film collective Total Refusal describe themselves as a pseudo-marxist media guerilla focused on the artistic intervention and appropriation of mainstream video games. They upcycle video games in order to reveal the political apparatus beyond the glossy and hyperreal textures of this media. Kinderfilm, their latest short film, is presented in this selection and we are delighted that the collective will be represented at the festival.
