Taboo at Edinburgh Fringe 2019

“A woman´s sexuality must be controlled, otherwise she endangers the stability of the whole system.”

This one-woman-show focuses on the double standards of society, back then as well as today. Against the backdrop of the historical figure of Käthe Petersen – a social worker from 1932 to 1966 in Germany who´s mission was to protect the morality of women by any means necessary – TABOO puts the concept of female sexual self-determination up for discussion, which lands us in an active exchange with the audience.

Due to Nora Dirisamers´ brilliant directing the evening has a satirical sharpening and does not drown in dismay. Seemingly fleet-footed, advertisement recordings from the 50s invite the audience to reflect on stereotypical female clichés. While your laugh might get stuck in your throat.

After a successful run in Austria where she has won the Dramatic Award from the region Upper Austria and at Brighton Fringe, the writer and performer Karin Schmid takes TABOO to the Edinburgh Fringe 2019.

Quote: this play has stuck in my mind the most. History from the first half of the twentieth century is often viewed in the comfort of black and white moral absolutes. This shows very well how easy it is for moral absolutes to astray. – Chris Neville-Smith for chrisontheatre (Brighton Fringe)
