We are beyond excited to announce a new edition of the popular contemporary music platform Soundings, our cross-cultural exchange, finally returning to London in November this year.

Join us for a week of creative collaborations and exchanges, curated by pianist Mary Dullea, gaining insight into the worlds of new music from the Austrian and UK creative scenes.

Originally initiated in 2004 by the ACF London, Soundings welcomes young composers and musicians from Austria and the UK for four days of open rehearsals, discussions and public performances. A key event for all those interested in new music, performance and cross-border composition.

Soundings collaborates with some of the UK's most recognised and celebrated performers, bringing their expertise to the development and performance of these new works from some of today's leading composers from both countries.
It offers a rare opportunity to meet and watch the composers at work and hear their latest compositions, many receiving their UK or world premiere.

This year’s Soundings will feature six exciting talents: Austrian composers Hannah Eisendle, Daniel Oliver Moser, and Roozbeh Nafisi, and UK representatives Litha Efthymiou, Bushra El-Turk and Robin Haigh.

Their works will be rehearsed in workshops open to the public and performed in two evening concerts by the musicians Darragh Morgan (violin), Louise McMonagle (cello), Mary Dullea (piano), Richard Jones (viola), Julian Warburton (percussion), Byron Fulcher (trombone), Sirius Chau (flute), Dave Larkin (violin) and Max Welford (clarinet).

The evening concerts will take place on Wednesday, 2 November and Thursday, 3 November.

A highlight of this year’s programme will be the world premiere of Hannah Eisendle’s new work - grey -, exclusively written for the ACF’s 65th anniversary in 2021.

Moreover, there will be dedicated Composer Portrait sessions (2 & 3 November, 15:30 – 17:30) with Shirley J. Thompson, an award-winning composer, academic and cultural activist. Thompson will discuss and unravel with the participating composers, trends in their recent work as well as the works to be performed in the two concerts. She will also introduce both evening concerts with insights from the week’s discussions.

We will also host a panel discussion (3 November, 17:45 – 18:30) with Gabriella Di Laccio (soprano & equality activist), Shirley J. Thompson (composer, academic & cultural activist), Alex Groves (composer, curator & producer), Mary Dullea (curator & pianist) and Waltraud Dennhardt-Herzog (Director, Austrian Cultural Forum London), examining questions of equality and diversity in classical and contemporary music.
