Sound Park Austria 7: World Music

  • Wed 15 Jun 2011
  • 7:30PM

The Austrian Cultural Forum London presents a unique music series which aims to stimulate the creative exchange between Austrian and British musicians whose repertoire encompasses music outside the classical tradition. When thought of as a concept rather than a genre, World Music can engage and challenge our view of music, and how it fits into our culture. We are particularly proud to present two of Austria’s foremost representatives of this idea: Matthias Loibner (hurdy gurdy) and Natasa Mirkovic (De Ro, voice) who will perform ‘Ajvar & Sterz’, their unique interpretation of poignant and playful songs from South East Europe and Alpine Austria, which thrilled audiences at the Balkan Fever London festival in 2007.

They will be joined by Soumik Datta and Jason Singh from the UK. Soumik Datta is a torch bearer of the rare Indian fretless instrument: Sarod. An artist in residence at Southbank centre he is one of Britain's most compelling star musicians. While rooted in classical Indian music his innovations have led to stellar collaborations with Akram Khan, Talvin Singh, Bill Bailey, Jay Z and Beyonce. An electrifying performer and Nitin Sawhney's 'favourite musician', Soumik has toured worldwide, composed for feature films and heads his own label Baithak Records. In a premier and groundbreaking collaboration Soumik joins prolific beatboxer Jason Singh and Italian guitarist Guiliano Modarelli. Combining the majestic Sarod with underground beats, flamenco strings and contemporary soundscapes this is set to be an unmissable night of cutting-edge live music.

Jason Singh has played at the BBC proms, has been an artist in residence at the Contact Theatre in Manchester and toured India promoting beatboxing as an art form. He has worked with Nitin Sawhney, is an advocate for Sing Up and headed the multimedia project Sign Language. With a signature style of his own, Jason is a remarkable innovator with an endless inventory of sounds that has captivated audiences across the globe.

Originally from Italy, Giuliano Modarelli is a virtuoso guitarist unique in his style. During his musical  research and experience, he has explored many different genres of music leading him to develop a hybrid style which is now instantly recognisable in his sound. Giuliano is a guitarist of modern times seamlessly blending flamenco, classical and Indian sounds. Heading his band Samay, he has toured extensively and is a prolific composer.
