London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink and featuring the Eltham College Children's Choir perform Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream & Ravel's Mother Goose Ballet.
Ravel always seemed quite the dandy, but he retained a childlike love of mechanical toys and old-fashioned fairy tales. His delicious Mother Goose piano suite, inspired by friends’ children, was developed into an exquisite full ballet score in 1912. There’s breathless fantasy too in Mendelssohn’s incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1843), a favourite play from his childhood. ‘He identified with all of the characters,’ recalled his sister.
