Born just four years apart, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss’s careers ran in parallel until Mahler’s early death in 1911. They were both composers and conductors, courted by some of the most successful opera houses and orchestras in Europe at the time. Gavin Plumley will survey the life and works of these two composers in tandem, as well as the composers’ poetic choices, philosophical ainities and individual approaches to a world after Wagner. The Final session will look in depth at Strauss’s self-acknowledged tribute to Mahler, Eine Alpensinfonie.
