Mahler and his Circle – Part I: Unbridled Passions 1897–1904

  • Thu 27 May 2010
  • 7:00PM

A series of three lecture-recitals devised by Brendan G Carroll

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler, writer and musicologist Brendan Carroll examines the convoluted relationships between Mahler, his wife Alma and the many composers and musicians who formed part of their intimate circle in Vienna. Each unique programme will feature rare and (in some cases) unknown Lieder by Mahler and his contemporaries, as well as works by his younger colleagues, many of whom he influenced. Rarities to be performed will include the almost unknown Violin Sonata by Mahler’s great friend and interpreter Bruno Walter (performed by Robert Gibb) and the Lieder of Mahler’s successor at the Vienna Opera, Felix Weingartner.

Daniela Lehner (mezzo-soprano)
Oliver Davies (piano)

Exploring the convoluted relationship between Mahler, Zemlinsky and Alma Schindler, the first recital will draw together the links between all three and the group of composers and musicians who were part of their intimate circle. Early works by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern together with music by Joseph Marx and the young Erich Wolfgang Korngold will show how wide the influence of Mahler was felt in music written in Austria during the first half of the 20th century
