Given Alma's notoriety and the glamorous singers who surrounded Mahler before their marriage, the erotic is bizarrely underplayed in the composer's life and work. One recent commentator remarked that there was no erotic dimension to Mahler's music. Our attraction and responses to Mahler's music, however, tell a very different story. Gavin Plumley will look at Mahler's symphonies and songs through a more sensual lens, asking whether Mahler's music belongs with the highly sexualised world of Viennese Jugendstil.
