Devised and presented by Gerald Davidson with Johanna Lonsky as Margarete.
From the age of 9 until 14 Margarete Hamerschlag attended the children’s art class of Franz Cižek at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. A London exhibition of children’s art produced in Cižek’s Viennese studio kindled the interest of art inspectors at the London County Council and Cižek’s methods and materials were pioneered in London schools between the wars and were embedded in the post war curriculum. But in the rough youth clubs of 1950s London, Austrian émigré Margarete struggles to teach art in the way she had been taught it back home. This cross cultural voyage is organized in association with the exhibition Margarete Berger-Hamerschlag: A Lifetime of Passionate Endeavour on display at the ACF London until 30 July.
