Invisible Producers – Constanze Ruhm and Laura Mulvey in conversation

Building upon their ongoing dialogue, artist and author Constanze Ruhm and film theorist Laura Mulvey will discuss projection as a cinematographic mechanism and a psychoanalytic concept. This notion is at the centre of both Ruhm’s current project INVISIBLE PRODUCERS and Mulvey's recent reflections on the repressed of the cinematic apparatus. Ruhm and Mulvey will consider how notions of projection have been crucial to the development of their own work and how digital technologies may shift our understanding of projection itself and other key concepts of film theory and practice.

Constanze Ruhm is an artist and author who lives between Vienna, Berlin and Paris. Her work explores the interactions between film and film theory, on the one hand, and theatrical forms and new media on the other, primarily with regards to questions of identity, representation and feminism. Her productions include installations, film and video work, publications and curatorial projects. She is Professor for Art and Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Adjunct Professor at the Art Institute Boston, Lesley University. Her most recent production, PANORAMIS PARAMOUNT PARANORMAL (in collaboration with Emilien Awada), was premiered at ‘Forum Expanded’, Berlinale, international film festival Berlin, 2015.

Laura Mulvey has been writing about film and film theory since the mid-1970s. She has published Visual and Other Pleasures (1989, new updated edition 2009), Fetishism and Curiosity (1996), Citizen Kane (1996) and Death Twenty-four Times a Second: Stillness and the Moving Image (2006). In the late 1970s and early 80s, she co-directed six films with Peter Wollen including Riddles of the Sphinx (1978; dvd release 2013) and Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti (1980). In 1994, she co-directed, with artist/film-maker Mark Lewis, Disgraced Monuments, with whom she has also made 23 August 2008 (2013). She is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London and Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image.
