IBC Virtual Conference: 'ich lebe ich schreibe'. Friederike Mayröcker (1924–2021)

  • 4 Jul 2024 — 5 Jul 2024

Friederike Mayröcker, generally considered to be one of the greatest German-language poets of her generation, is comparatively little researched. She has also written (poetic) prose, radio-plays, children’s books and produced a wealth of drawings. Her legacy is a large body of work, about a hundred publications over a long writing life of nearly eighty years. Mayröcker’s texts are tricky to translate and resist interpretation: they challenge us instead to reflect on what interpretation can achieve.

This online conference, jointly organised by Andrea Capovilla (Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature & Culture at the ILCS) and Nicola Thomas (Lancaster University), will engage with Mayröcker’s fascinating and difficult body of work from a variety of angles, such as her close engagement with music, visual arts and post-structuralist theory, her nature-writing, and questions of voice, intertextuality, translation and translatability.

Participation is free, but advance online booking is essential. More info & full programme can be found here.
