Gerti Deutsch (1908–79) came to London from her home city of Vienna before the Anschluss in 1938. She brought with her a portfolio of photographs, including the studio portraits of Austrian artists and musicians shown here for the first time. Once here, Gerti Deutsch moved into the field of photojournalism, working for fifteen years for the weekly magazine Picture Post, before branching out into the new weekend supplements and travel magazines of the 1960s. However, she maintained her close connection with the arts – and with Austrians – as can be seen by some of the more serious (as well as a few humorous) stories featured in this exhibition.
