The idea of the English Landscape Garden – naturalistic in form but pictorial and associative, with many styles of garden building from classical to rustic – spread right through Europe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Michael Symes takes us on a tour of some of the best and most rewarding examples in France, Germany, Austria, Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. He is an author, lecturer and garden historian. He founded the MA course in Garden History at Birkbeck, University of London, in 2000, and has written and
lectured extensively on the subject.
This lecture is organised by the Friends of Castle Sychrov UK.
