Brahms’s 1875 Third Piano Quartet is sometimes called the Werther Quartet after Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. One of the keystones of the repertoire for the medium, his Piano Quintet (1862-4) is an epic composition that went through two other emanations before finding its ultimate realisation in its present form.
