Poet and translator Donna Stonecipher reads from and discusses her translations of Mayröcker’s études (2013), one of Mayröcker’s late works and part of a trilogy of book-length texts which includes cahier (2014) and fleurs (2016). Stonecipher will talk about her encounter with the late Friederike Mayröcker and reflect on the specific demands of translating this richly allusive diary-like sequence of poems, as well as on questions of affinity and kinship with the poetic voice and its author.
Donna Stonecipher is the author of The Ruins of Nostalgia (2023), Model City (2020), and Transaction Histories (2018), as well as other collections of poetry, translations and criticism. Her translation of Mayröcker’s études was supported by a US National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
This reading and discussion is organised in conjunction with the conference 'ich lebe ich schreibe'. Friederike Mayröcker (1924–2021).
