Marking the centenary of the death of Franz Kafka the ACF London presents a special seasons of films. While many writers have left their mark on cinema, Kafka has inspired countless films, not only adaptations but gave rise to a whole cinematic tradition referred to as Kafkaesque Cinema. This transnational cinematic tradition was rooted in Kafka's critique of modernity. The final film in this season, Polanski's The Tenant is our pick for the Kafkaesque genre.

Trelkovsky, an isolated and shy Eastern European émigré, moves into a typical Parisian apartment block. Soon his neighbours begin to eye him with suspicious disdain, while the strict concierge and the icy landlord lay down strict rules of behaviour. When he discovers that the apartment's previous tenant, a mysterious young woman, has jumped out of the window, Trelkovsky soon finds himself caught in a cobweb of fear and paranoia that he may be the next victim.

France, 1976, 126min, English & French with English subtitles, directed by Roman Polanski
