Double Bill: The She Devil & Crossing Boundaries

  • Wed 25 May 2016
  • 7:00PM

Heimatfilm, a genre particular to the German-speaking world drew on the tradition of Bergfilm (mountain film), as promoted by the Frank School in the 1920s and 30s. The Heimatfilm idealised the beauty of nature and fulfilled the audiences’ need to escape post war gloom for a few hours. The She Devil (Der Weibsteufel, 1966) based on Karl Schönherr’s play of the same title (1914) navigates the Heimatfilm genre but really should be recognized as an example of Austrian Neo-Verismo due to its superb photography. Florian Flicker's (1965–2014) Crossing Boundaries (Der Grenzgänger, 2012) is based on the same play but set in a world overshadowed by the Iron Curtain. Both films depict a dramatic triangle between love and passion, transgression and betrayal.

7pm - The She Devil, Austria, 1966, 91 mins, German with English subtitles, directed by Georg Tressler
8:50pm - Crossing Boundaries, Austria, 2012, 90 mins, German with English subtitles, directed by Florian Flicker.
