Viennese director, scriptwriter and producer Ulrich Seidl (b. 1952) often provokes intense reactions: His unique style dissects human behaviour in unsparing and explicit close-ups. The fictional Dog Days (Hundstage, 2001) tells six stories from Viennese suburban no man’s land during the hottest days in the year, while the documentary Jesus, You Know (Jesus, Du Weißt, 2003) concentrates on very personal conversations and prayers of six believers with Jesus – a charged topic, considering Seidl’s complex relationship with Catholicism and its institutions.
