On the occasion of the anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty, the Austrian Embassy and the Austrian Cultural Forum were delighted to welcome Angela Allen (The Third Man) and Sir Roderic Braithwaite to the Austrian Ambassador's Residence London. They were expertly interviewed by historian Dr Karina Urbach.


Angela Allen MBE was 19 years old when she travelled to Vienna to work as script supervisor on the Third Man. Since then, she has worked on over 100 iconic films including The African Queen, Moby Dick, Charge of the Light Brigade, Women in Love, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Misfits, Murder on the Orient Express, and Tea with Mussolini. In 2005 she was awarded a BAFTA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema and later a Channel 4 Lifetime Achievement Award from Women In Film & Television.

Sir Rodric Braithwaite came to Vienna in 1951 as an 18-year-old conscript in the British army. He worked at a secret listening station at the Aspang Bahnhof and later screened refugees from Eastern Europe. After studying Russian at Cambridge, he joined the diplomatic service in 1955. His posts included Indonesia, Italy and Poland. In 1988 he became British ambassador in Moscow. He was chairman of the UK Joint Intelligence Committee in 1992/93. His latest book Russia. Myths and Realities was published after the invasion of Ukraine.

Dr Karina Urbach is a German/British historian and novelist. She is a senior research fellow at the Institute of Historical Research at London University. Angela Allen and Sir Rodric Braithwaite were sources for her novel Das Haus am Gordon Place, which won the 2024 German Crime award. It will be published in English under the title Vienna’48.
