VALIE EXPORT is one of the most radical audiovisual artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, whose work spans 16mm film, video, expanded cinema performances and digital art. Since 1965, she has created a complex artistic oeuvre that is boundary-defying and fundamentally uncomfortable. EXPORT’s work is as much about physical self-determination as it is about appropriation; about questions of identity and difference, communication and the refusal to communicate; about the positioning of women and gender non-conforming people; about war, division, fragmentation, objectification, non-belonging.
On the occasion of the launch of How to Do Things with VALIE EXPORT, a new book on her filmic work published by the Austrian Film Museum (Vienna) and Spector Books (Leipzig), we present a selection of canonical and lesser-known films by VALIE EXPORT, followed by a conversation about the artist’s work.
