Martin Grubinger & Royal Scottish National Orchestra at Edinburgh International Festival

  • Tue 9 Aug 2022

Join Austrian soloist Martin Grubinger, one of the world’s greatest percussionists, for a performance with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Elim Chan, celebrating the natural world with the stunning The Tears of Nature by Chinese-born composer Tan Dun.

Chinese-born composer Tan Dun has entranced moviegoers with his sumptuous film scores, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and excited concertgoers with kaleidoscopic music drawing on the exquisite sounds of China. He wrote his Percussion Concerto The Tears of Nature in 2012 for the exuberant Austrian soloist Martin Grubinger, one of the world’s greatest percussionists. The Concerto raises alarm at our climate crisis, but also celebrates the inspiration of the natural world in music drenched in colour and unashamedly theatrical.

Hong Kong-born Elim Chan, the RSNO’s vibrant Principal Guest Conductor, directs the Orchestra in this brilliantly entertaining work. There’s more Hollywood-style glamour in the roof-raising showpiece of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. Its whirling energy and mischievous wit showcase the extraordinary talents of the RSNO musicians in a defiant cry of joy from a Hungarian composer in the USA in 1943.
