The Department of Music & Sound Recording at the University of Surrey, is hosting the Gustav Mahler Centenary Conference ‘Gustav Mahler: Contemporary of the Past?’ The conference will include papers and discussions on a number of historical, cultural, analytical and performance-related topics led by world-leading Mahler scholars, including a keynote address from Prof Julian Johnson (Royal Holloway), and contributions from, among others, Peter Revers, professor of Music History at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz. There will be a composer discussion forum featuring David Matthews, Edward Gregson, Anthony Payne, Emily Howard, Tom Armstrong and Steve Goss.
Lunchtime and evening concerts will take place throughout the conference and will include a song and piano recital using a 19thcentury instrument once owned by Mahler. Alongside the conference, an exhibition of Mahler-inspired paintings by Caroline Tate will be on display in the Lewis Elton Gallery on campus.
