Rose
In the aftermath of the ferocious Thirty Years’ War, a scarred female soldier dangerously inveigles her way into a strict rural community by posing as a man with an inheritance. Seemingly dispassionate in its watchful, austere monochrome, yet quietly devastating in its unflinching look at gender-based prejudice and intolerance, Markus Schleinzer’s masterful film is another triumph for Hüller.

Everytime
Sandra Wollner’s film, winner of Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year, is an enigmatic exploration of grief and the path to healing. In Sandra Wollner’s lyrical and haunting third feature, a mother, a daughter and a teenage boy struggle with blame and forgiveness over a recent tragedy that saw their lives intersect. To escape their daily surroundings, they travel to Tenerife. As the long days go by under the sun and heat, reality and memories blend as each grapples with their feelings and a desire to move forward.

The Blood Countess / Die BlutGräfin

Isabelle Huppert dazzles as the Blood Countess in this delightful and high-camp gothic fantasy from visionary filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger. After awakening from a long slumber, the Blood Countess embarks on a quest, with her devoted maid and trusty pet bat in tow, to search for an ancient text that could cause the demise of her vampire realm. Based on the legend of Countess Elizabeth Báthory, Huppert perfectly embodies the role of the bloodthirsty seductress who reigns over present-day Vienna.

Gentle Monster

Léa Seydoux delivers the performance of a lifetime in this tense drama from the award-winning director of Corsage. Seydoux plays Lucy, whose marriage to Philip, the father of their young son, appears happy and stable until he is investigated by the police for possessing child sexual-abuse material. The officer in charge is balancing work with a challenging personal life, caring for an ailing father whose behaviour crosses boundaries. Morally complex and boldly directed, Marie Kreutzer’s drama raise.
