Q&A with protagonist Mona Golabek, director Josh Aronson and producer Wendy Fisher
Lisa and her daughter, Mona, two brilliant concert pianists, have lives which are so deeply intertwined, it’s hard to tell where one begins and one ends. In this searingly heartfelt and epic documentary, Mona Golabek tells the story of her mother, a child-prodigy pianist, and her escape from Vienna on a Kindertransport, as one of 10,000 unaccompanied, rescued children who came to England in 1938-39. Lisa’s father, Abraham, reduced to penury, like much of the remaining Jewish population of Vienna, had won a ticket on a Kindertransport whilst gambling. He and his wife, Malka, had to make the terrible choice of which of their three beautiful daughters’ lives would be saved. They chose Lisa. With rarely seen archive of wartime Vienna and London, and moving voice interviews and piano recordings from her mother, Lisa, daughter Mona recounts this story of music’s power to restore new life, and to counter the terrible loneliness which was the feature of so many of the young Kindertransport children’s lives. An extraordinary and life affirming tale, this fascinating film is a sweeping testament to survival, artistry, and the enduring strength of a mother’s love.
