Constellations of Desire: The Films of Elfi Mikesch

  • 5 May 2026 — 7 Jun 2026

The Goethe-Institut London, together with Club des Femmes and in cooperation with the ICA, presents a selection of films directed by Elfi Mikesch.

Best known for her work as a cinematographer with Rosa von Praunheim, Monika Treut, Friederike Pezold, Heinz Emigholz, Cynthia Beatt, and Teresa Villaverde, Mikesch has also developed a uniquely genre-blending body of work as a director, which has had a significant influence on feminist and queer cinema.

The programme includes three short films, her experimental feature Macumba, the hybrid documentaries I Often Think of Hawaii and What Shall We Do Without Death, the autobiographically inspired features Marocain and Fever, as well as Seduction: The Cruel Woman, co-directed with Monika Treut and now regarded as a queer-feminist cult classic. All the works except the more recent Fever (2014) have been restored by the Deutsche Kinemathek and the Hamburg Kinemathek (Seduction).
