With The Inheritors (Die Erben) CineClub continues its focus on Austrian cinema from the 1980s. This rarely seen film from 1983 provides a unique and unwavering insightinto a neo-Nazi organisation. Two young people from different backgrounds are drawn into right-wing activities where they seek meaning and a sense of community. As right-wing populist forces gain strength across Europe, Bannert's film is as topical and uncomfortable as ever.
Thomas Feigl grows up in a bourgeois neighbourhood of Vienna. On the surface all seems rosy. But a closer look soon reveals a dysfunctional family and like many other teenagers, Thomas is anxious about the future and his place in the world.
When he meets Charley, a slightly older boy from a very different class background, the adventures his new friend have to offer come as much desired change. But soon Thomas finds himself in a downward spiral as he's sucked into the world of a right-wing extremist group.
The film premiered at Cannes Director's Fortnight and won the Young Director's award at Montreal Film Festival.
