The ACF London's CineClub is pleased to presented a special programme of celebrated Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke's early work. Initially produced and shot for Austria’s TV ORF, the four titles were directed by Haneke between 1976 and 1993. Restored by Les Films du Losange with the support of the Austrian Film Institute, Haneke led the restorations himself.
We begin the programme with Three Paths to the Lake (1976). Elisabeth Matrei, a photojournalist and war photographer, returns to her hometown Klagenfurt, to vacation with her widowed father. There, she reflects on her childhood her romantic life.
While the austerity that would come to define Haneke’s style is not wholly formed here, questions around moral duty, memory and the use of images find their embryonic beginnings in this newly restored Ingeborg Bachmann adaptation. Three Paths to the Lake sees Haneke at his most conventional, yet thoughtful and still able to deliver an emotional sucker punch.
Austria, West Germany, 1976, 97min, German with subtitles.
