We are excited to continue our Think Tank series on AI & US – The Influence of AI on Education in collaboration with AUKSA (Austro-UK Science Alliance).
As Artificial Intelligence shifts from concept to daily reality, it is rapidly transforming not only how we work, but how we learn, communicate and make sense of the world. From education and media to justice and identity, the societal ripple effects of AI are unfolding faster than our frameworks for understanding them.
Building on the first event in September last year, we continue to discuss the impact of AI focusing on the influence on education. An expert panel of researchers, policy makers, educators and creatives will present and discuss the impact of AI from a technology and social-economic perspective.
We will explore:
- Policies and regulatory frameworks governing the use of artificial intelligence in education within the United Kingdom and Austria
- Challenges faced by educators and lecturers in integrating and adapting to AI technologies
- Limitations and opportunities associated with the use of AI in education more broadly
- Outlook for teaching, learning and assessment in an increasingly AI-integrated academic landscape
The format for the evening will feature a keynote followed by a lively panel discussion and the opportunity to ask questions. The speakers for the evening will be announced shortly.

Tim Neumann is Associate Professor (Teaching) at the UCL Knowledge Lab, UCL Institute of Education, where he also leads the Learning Technologies Unit and serves as Faculty Learning Technology Lead. Trained as an audio engineer, he brings a background of more than ten years in music and event production, media production, and broadcast-industry training to his work in education and technology. His academic and professional interests focus on online and blended pedagogy, e-learning, web conferencing, media production, and the adoption of learning technologies in higher education. Through his leadership of the Learning Technologies Unit, he supports technology-enhanced teaching, curriculum development, and pedagogic innovation across UCL’s Institute of Education.
Dr Martina Landman is a Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge, working in the field of Computing Education with a current focus on AI Education. She is also a member of the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre. Trained in mathematics and informatics education, she has several years of teaching experience in Austria, where she taught computer science and mathematics to secondary-school students. Her research explores how learners engage with computing concepts, including problem-solving strategies, computer science education, and the role of emerging technologies in teaching and learning. Previously affiliated with TU Wien, she contributed to computer science education initiatives including the TU Wien Informatics eduLAB.
Dr Thomas Lancaster is a Principal Teaching Fellow in Computing at Imperial College London, with over 25 years of experience in higher education. His work focuses on the educational use of generative AI, academic integrity, student cheating, plagiarism, and contract cheating. He completed a PhD in 2003 on technical approaches to plagiarism detection from a computer science perspective and has since become an internationally recognised researcher and speaker on academic integrity, essay mills, and the challenges posed by emerging technologies in education. His publications span computer science education, e-learning, employability, plagiarism detection, and academic misconduct, with recent work examining the impact of large language models and generative AI on assessment and university policy.
Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Inf. Dr.sc.techn. Florian Michahelles is University Professor for Ubiquitous Computing at TU Wien, affiliated with the Faculty of Informatics and the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-Centred Technology. Since joining TU Wien in 2020, he has led research in artifact-based computing and user research, exploring how ubiquitous and intelligent technologies can support everyday tasks while keeping users in control. He holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Munich and a doctorate from ETH Zurich, where he focused on ubiquitous and wearable computing. Before TU Wien, he held positions at ETH Zurich, including Associate Director of the Auto-ID Lab, and worked in industry as Head of a research group at Siemens in Berkeley, California. His work spans ubiquitous computing, the Internet of Things, RFID, mobile applications, human-centred interaction, smart environments, and AI-supported tools for creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration.
The Austro-UK Science Alliance (AUKSA) is a bilateral initiative that brings together Austrian scientists based in the UK and fosters closer collaboration between the Austrian and British research communities. It was launched in spring 2025 at the Austrian Ambassador's Residence London. AUKSA serves as a platform to showcase Austrian scientific excellence, strengthen international research partnerships and promote meaningful academia–industry exchange and knowledge transfer. Through curated events, strategic dialogues, and joint initiatives, AUKSA highlights Austria’s scientific contributions abroad while building lasting connections across disciplines and institutions.
