The Austrian Cultural Forum London is thrilled to invite submissions of translations into English of Austrian poetry, short fiction and book extracts, and original short fiction and poetry in English inspired by Austrian arts and culture, up to 2000 words in length.This is the first time these prizes have been offered, and have been organised by the ACF Translator in Residence.
A winner and two commended runners-up will be selected for each prize. The winning translator and winning writer will have their pieces published in the print issue of literary journal Structo, and the winning and commended translators will also be invited to attend a translation workshop with the Translator in Residence. Both winning and selected commended translators and writers will be invited to read their work at an evening reception at the Austrian Cultural Forum on Wednesday 29th March.
Judging the Translation Prize are:
Jamie Bulloch, literary translator. Jamie’s translations include Austrian author Linda Stift’s The Empress and the Cake, Steven Uhly’s Kingdom of Twilight, Timur Vermes’ Look Who’s Back and Birgit Vanderbecke’s The Mussel Feast, which won him the Schlegel-Tieck Prize and was runner up in the Independent Fiction Prize. He is also the author of Karl Renner: Austria.’
Jen Calleja, literary translator, writer and ACF Translator in Residence. Jen’s translations include Kerstin Hensel’s Dance by the Canal, Gregor Hens’ Nicotine and a co-translation of Wim Wenders’ Paul Cezanne’s Pixels. As part of her residency she has translated short fiction by Austrian authors including Anna Weidenholzer, Teresa Präauer, Tex Rubinowitz and Carolina Schutti.

Judging the Writing Prize are:
Eley Williams, writer and lecturer. Eley is co-editor of fiction at 3:AM magazine. Her debut collection of short stories is forthcoming from Influx Press.
Jen Calleja, literary translator, writer and ACF Translator in Residence. Jen’s short fiction and poetry have appeared in Ambit, Podium (Vienna), Somesuch Stories and The Quietus and her debut collection of poetry was published last year by Test Centre.

On Structo magazine: Structo is a literary magazine lost somewhere between the UK and the Netherlands. It was founded in 2008, and publishes short stories and poetry alongside essays and interviews, also in translation. https://structomagazine.co.uk/
Please read the below guidelines and information on how to submit:
ACF Translation Prize Submission Guidelines:
• It is free to submit.
• The translation must not exceed 2000 words.
• Please send your translation and the original text or poem you translated as one document (or, if the original extract is a PDF, in the same email if necessary).
• Along with the above documents, you should also submit a cover letter stating your name, the name of the original writer, the English and German titles, your contact details, and a statement (a copy and pasted email is preferable) saying that you have permission from the copyright holder (if it’s been published this is usually the rights manager of the German-language publisher, if not then the author) to submit and have this translation published in Structo, unless the original is already in the public domain. Without this information we cannot accept the submission.
• Your submission should be saved as one Word Document under the file name [TRANSLATION PRIZE_YourName] • Do not include your name anywhere in the Word document apart from in the cover letter.
• You can submit as many translations as you like, as long as they are submitted separately.
• Translated novel extracts should be able to stand alone.
• Translations must not have been previously published in any way.
• Simultaneous submissions are not allowed.
• For those based in UK only.
ACF Writing Prize Submission Guidelines:
• It is free to submit.
• We would like to see poems and short fiction of up to 2000 words in length that take Austrian art, literature, culture and/or history, or Austria itself, as their starting point or subject.
• Along with your piece you should also submit a cover letter stating your name, the title, your contact details, and, if you wish, one or two lines about what your inspiration was for the piece.
• Your submission should be saved as a Word Document under the file name [WRITING PRIZE_YourName]
• Do not include your name anywhere in the Word document apart from in the cover letter.
• You can submit as many pieces as you like, as long as they are submitted separately.
• Pieces must not have been previously published in any way.
• Simultaneous submissions are not allowed.
• For those based in UK only.
