The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief (Das Spitzentuch der Königin)

The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief (Das Spitzentuch der Königin)

The British première of a comic operetta by Johann Strauss II

29 – 31 August 2017

Johann Strauss’s seventh operetta was considered a great success when it opened at Theater an der Wien in 1880 and ran for over 100 performances. It was an even bigger success when it was staged in New York at the newly built Casino Opera House two years later. In the following twenty years it was performed more times in the United States than Die Fledermaus; yet strangely it has never been performed professionally in this country. Opera della Luna’s new production takes place at London’s historic Wilton’s Music Hall.

The plot purports to be set around a fictitious incident in 16th century Portugal involving the writer Cervantes, but really it is a picture of the Austrian court of Franz Josef in 1880, with the young King in the story clearly representing the 19 year old Crown Prince Rudolf who was to die so tragically nine years later at Mayerling.

Opera della Luna are the UK’s leading performers of comic opera. Last year’s production of Tales of Offenbach at Wilton’s gathered many 4 and 5 star reviews in the national press.

The performances start at 19.30
