Wienfilm 1896–1976 constitutes the first feature length film completed by Ernst Schmidt Jr (1938–1988), a work praised as ‘one of the most consistent, most well-calculated avant-garde films of the new Viennese filmmakers’ (Basler Zeitung). An anthology about Vienna from the invention of film to the present day, it breaks down the usual clichéd image by juxtaposing documentary footage, newly shot material and subjective sequences created by various artists.
