This newly restored 1924 silent film from inter-war Vienna, being screened with a live performance of Olga Neuwirth’s new musical score, is ominous, portentous, and completely unforgettable. H K Breslauer’s satirical dystopia shows the cultural and economic impoverishment of a city that expels its Jewish population, and chillingly predicts the murderous anti-Semitism that was soon to follow as the Nazi party rose to power.
Ensemble Phace, who will accompany the film with live music, was founded by their Executive & Artistic Director Reinhard Fuchs, one of the first composers from Austria to join the ACF's Soundings platform for contemporary music.
