To mark the centenary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on the 28 June 1914 the ACF will screen the British anti-war film The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp from 1943. The film, produced by Powell & Pressburger, is remarkable for its sympathetic portrayal of a German soldier performed by Austrian actor Anton Walbrook. Winston Churchill believed the film would damage army moral and he even attempted to halt production. It continued to face heavy criticism for years until a highly successful re-release of the film in the 1980s, led to its reevaluation.
