Acclaimed Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel, is considered one of the leading interpreters of 20th Century classical music. Alongside this illustrius career Brendl has also penned numerous poems and essays on musical subjects. In his book „Nachdenken über Musik“ Brendl examines works by Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Busoni. He compares Schubert’s sonatas with Beethoven’s and attempts to pinpoint Schubert’s uniqueness with regard to his grand idol. In contrast to Beethoven, who is often compared to an “architect” because of his structured approach to composing, Schubert arguably composed his works like a sleepwalker. While Beethoven creates a firm frame for his works, Schubert trusts in the immediacy of deep emotions. In Schubert’s works form plays a subordinate role and does not weigh upon the listeners. Brendel also writes poems (humorous, bizarre, grotesque). He has published five poetry collections so far.
